Gerald Wallace is one of my favorite players in the game right now. Both as a multi pronged Fantasy WMD, and as a solid, versatile swingman. He's one of the few guys in the league that can give Bronny and Kobe fits, he can shoot from anywhere on the court, he's a high flying dunksmith, and he's the polar opposite of Artest in terms of media whoring. He's everything you wanna see out of a combo guard-forward, with the exception of a nagging injury bug that has caused him to miss 154 games over the last 6 seasons. He's the best offensive player and best defensive player on the young Bobcats. So this little bit from the Sacramento Bee is pleasing:
Come July, though, Wallace will have options. He is considered among the top free agents available. The Bobcats seem to place Wallace as a priority and have the spending room to follow through, but they are also amid change. Michael Jordan, the team's managing member of basketball operations, announced Tuesday that coach-general manager Bernie Bickerstaff won't be courtside next season, though he likely will retain his upper-management duties. Still, Wallace said he likes the direction of the franchise. "It feels pretty good to me, the way the organization is going and the way they're putting everything together," Wallace said. "I like the guys they're (bringing) in, so it's pretty much a good situation for me here." Wallace had it good against the Kings, with his squad winning despite his struggles against Ron Artest. The Kings small forward held Wallace to 13 points on 5-for-13 shooting, and Wallace fouled out with 3:37 remaining.
I haven't liked a Gerald this much since this guy.

Weak End at Bernie's
Bernie Bickerstaff will not be returning as the head coach of the Charlotte Bobcats. Read the whole story here, from Yahoo! Sports.
Much like the firing of Dwayne Casey earlier this year, I'm not crazy about this move. Bick has been, in my opinion, one of the best GMs in the league over the last couple seasons, putting together the hottest looking young core of 1st round picks in the league. He's done it while maintaining an almost impossibly low payroll. To put it in perspective; the Bobcats pay Gerald Wallace, Emeka Okafor, Ray Felton, Sean May, Primoz Brezec, Matt Carroll, Brevin Knight, Adam Morrison less in combined salary, than the Knicks pay for just Franchise and Starbury. Who would you rather have? Granted there are a lot of rookie contracts in there, and the reason they have so many good rookies is that they're so perennially awful that they always have a high 1st round pick. Still, Okafor and Wallace should both have been All Stars this year, Felton and May could both become major contributors, and the other guys have bright futures as role players. Bickerstaff is the one who put the team in position to sign both Vinsanity and Rashard Lewis this off season. They're the only team in the league that can literally outbid anyone. If they play their cards right, they could be in the hunt for Lewis, Carter, Garnett, Gasol, Billups, and anyone else who might hit the market this summer. As a coach, I also like what Bickerstaff has done with a constant injury epidemic. His team could be a lot worse, with Okafor and Wallace always down, and the young guys having no vets to look up to, Charlotte is a piece or two away from the playoffs. They've got 22 million in contracts coming off the books as soon as the season ends. They have to consider giving Wallace fat money to keep him, but it's not a necessity, as they'll also be walking into the best draft since '03 with yet another top 5 pick. I feel like this is the wrong time to announce this. They're already deep enough in the hole that they don't need to "play for the draft." Meaning they could go 15-5 to finish the year (massively unlikely) and still end up with a top 5 pick. So why completely undermine the rest of Bick's tenure by announcing his lame duck status? The Cats are in a unique position to really start getting creative and juggling lines. They have 20 games that don't matter at all, maybe they should spend them getting to know just how good Brezec, Carroll and Hollins are? Now's the time. Okafor's injured, again, might as well deactivate him for the homestretch, let him rest up and give the "younger" guys a chance to show what they've got. On top of that, is the fact that they're either gonna re-sign Wallace, sign-and-trade him, or let him go. Regardless of the situation, now's the time to showcase him. If they want to use him to get Pau, they'll need to up his dollar. Wallace, a Bickerstaff favorite, is less likely to be amenable to... anything, with Bernie gone. Jordan's saying Bickerstaff will remain in the organization, but as what GM? Cheerleader? By being shadowy, Jordan gives me the sneaking suspicion he's about to get his hands dirty and his feet wet. Can you say coach Jordan? I know the fans of Charlotte can...
UPDATE: This just occurred to me, but can you think of a better fit to replace Bickerstaff than Paul Silas?? Oh man, that'd be flawless casting by Jordan...

Open Letter to Rashard Lewis: Listen Close
Dear 'Shardy,
Don't sign with New York. It would just end badly for you. I know how hard it is to resist the apple's draw. But if you want to be the #1 or, at least, #2 guy on a squad, don't go to New York. The fans are great, the arena is great, and the team could become not so bad. The problem is with a guy called Zeke. He has proven this year that he did amass enough talent to win some games. And people have kind of eased off him, because the Knicks are suddenly a possibility to make the playoffs. But the fact remains that a team with Franchise, Starbury, Frye, Lee, Crawford, Curry, Jeffries and Robinson, should flat out run away with the Atlantic division. The reason they haven't is because every dude on the team, other than Curry, is constantly looking over their shoulder for Thomas' next hairbrained scheme. Lee and Frye should both be blossoming into studs this year, instead they're constantly replacing each other and having their confidence and rhythm undermined. Crawford may be the best player on the team, and has no cohesiveness with the players next to him. Starbury is underachieving because he's a baby, but he has a point about being annoyed that the team would go out and get Francis. Francis is Francis, and Curry is Curry. Get where I'm going with this? You would be the next non-fitting piece on a team loaded with talent that has no identity. Why not consider a better destination, maybe a place where you could take over as the #1 scoring option? I'm looking South and East.
Charlotte: Morrison has to be considered a disappointment. Wallace is a superstud, but need not be the go-to shooter. Felton needs to shoot way less, and Okafor appears to not want to shoot that much anyway. You could move right in as small forward, or power forward, and with your outside game (and the money they can throw at you) it would be a marriage made in heaven. Wallace looks to be passing on an extension anyway, and won't be there, which only makes this an even more attractive destination.
Orlando: Look, I love Hedo, Hill, Nelson, and Milicic, but this team needs a shooter. They've got no offensive identity and the front court of you, Howard and Milicic makes me literally drool. You could be a breakout 1st option scorer and I feel like you could also provide much needed leadership and camaraderie to fellow straight-from-high-school star, Dwight Howard. And between you and Howard, it's like daring the other team to double team one of you.
New Jersey: What's not to like about replacing Vinsanity in Jersey? You get one of the best pass first players ever dishing you the rock. You get to be the number 1 scoring option. And, by moving to the Atlantic division, you get to play for a team that, when healthy, is an almost lock to win the division. Factor in Krstic, Nachbar and Jefferson and that becomes a fearsome starting 5.
Progs: The universe being the cruel place it is, I bet you will be wooed by Thomas' tales of Xanadu in Madison Square. You start the first 5 games for the Knicks before Zeke benches you in favor of Jared Jeffries, to test his newest theory.

Get Carter
Is Vince leaving New Jersey?
The short answer is yes. The long answer is a little cloudier, but still basically "yes." I would bet the farm Vince Carter gets traded, either by the deadline, or in a sign & trade deal this off season. The thing is he's an expensive malcontent, one who can ball, no doubt about that, but a malcontent nonetheless. Also it's become evident that he can't make the Nets win. If a squad featuring JKidd, Vin, Dick Jefferson and Nenad "Can I Buy a Vowel?" Krstic can't win games, they need to blow it up. Oddly enough, that core did win last year. A lot. In fact, with the steep learning curve Krstic has been on, the rejuvenated play of Kidd and Carter and the rugged all around game of Jefferson, many had the Nets as a title contender this year. Those plans were derailed by the injuries to Krstic and Jefferson, and have the Nets battling the Knicks for the right to be called worse than the Raptors but better than the Sixers or Celtics. Not really much to brag about.
Now New Jersey's got lots of options. They're shopping both Carter and Kidd to anyone who'll listen. The offers back for Kidd have been paltry, and they're not likely to get anything sexier for Carter. At the end of this season, Carter can opt out of his contract and walk away amicably. As we learned from Mark Cuban, this isn't necessarily bad for the Nets. In a free agent rich off season, the Nets would be happy to let Carter walk and then attempt to re-direct his 16 million dollar salary at a stud who's been unleashed and taking bids. Unfortunately this is not a free agent rich market, this off season will not feature an overabundance of guys worth sinking serious loot into. It could; Rashard Lewis, Chauncey Billups, Antawn Jamison, Gerald Wallace and Mike Bibby all have opt out clauses similar to Carter's and could become free agents if they wanted to. But other than Orlando & Charlotte (and potentially Chicago) no team has got the bread to throw at them, so there's not much chance any of these guys are changing teams, without a trade happening, in the near future. Carter's situation is slightly different, because he's got a vested interest in going to either of those 2 teams with significant bank. Carter's family lives in the Florida-Carolina region, and he owns, amongst other things, a house down there. That's why this little snippet from Brian Schmitz at the Orlando Sentinel comes as no surprise... if it's true:
Then there was the talk that TNT, following Dwight Howard around, might have intercepted some dialogue between Carter and Howard that indicated VC might become magic property before the trade deadline.
If that's true my first question is: why the hell hasn't TNT made this little gold nugget known to the public? That's a frickin' page 1 exclusive. Regardless of the truth, or Otis Smith's firm denials, the concept of Orlando trading Grant Hill's expiring contract for Vince's services is almost too good to be true. Orlando talks a lot of yang about wanting to keep Grant Hill, but I can't believe they really mean it enough to pass on the versatile scoring threat (they desperately need) in Carter. Can you imagine a more lethal starting line than this? C- Darko, PF-Dwight Howard, SG/SF- Hedo Turkoglu, SG/SF- Vince Carter, PG- Jam Nelson. I'd have to call them favorites in the east with a line like that, and the best part is they don't have to give up instrumental bench guys like Dooling, Diener, Arroyo, Reddick and Battie to make it happen. I can't fathom why Magic GM Otis Smith is against such a deal, other than Vince's tradition of underachieving teams. Melvin Ely to the Spurs
Imagine my shock when this trade, Ely for Eric Williams and a 2008 2nd rounder, didn't send shockwaves through the league. Actually, this could be huge for Ely. Granted, nobody gets good minutes in San Antone, save for the big 3 (Duncan, Parker and Ginobes), but with Frankie Elson & Oh Boy Oberto underacheiving and nobody else with any size, Ely could be in for major minutes. And he's always responded well when given a look (see the last 2 years when Okafor spent more time on the bench than I did in JV Lacrosse).
Progs: Great steal for the Spurs in the short run. But don't be surprised when E Wills actually gets minutes in Charlotte (for some reason teams always think this guy is good...). And then definitely don't be surprised when Charlotte parlays the 2nd round pick into the next Gerald Wallace... In short, solid move for both teams.
